Comments: This film picks up a short time after the concluding events in 2001: A Space Odyssey. Despite tensions between the Pentagon and the Kremlin, a lead Soviet scientist personally contacts his former American counterpart. (He oversaw the Discovery One mission.) The Russian suggests that Americans hitch a ride on the Soviet spaceship that is slated for launch. It will intercept the abandoned Discovery near Jupiter. As the militaries of the two superpowers converge over a dispute in South America, the Russian cosmonauts awaken the American passengers. What they find is incredible.
This sequel replaces visual style with plot. Still, the visual effects of this film are superb. It offers a great message. Based on a novel. Highly recommended!
