Comments: This epic film opens with early mankind about to be wiped out by starvation and animals. Suddenly, a smooth, black, rectangular structure appears. It imparts the knowledge of tools and the "killer instinct" to the early humans. Flash forward four million years and man is in space. When a similar structure is uncovered on the moon, the scientists intercept a very powerful transmission to Jupiter. What awaits them on Jupiter?

This great production starts with minutes of music before gradually moving to images and finally showing mankind in space. It makes an astonishing device for building the story. I also love the attention to detail of the vehicles and bases. It's a thought-provoking and deep film with just enough dialogue. Stanley Kubrick guessed correctly about much of the technology. The climax is, of course, well known and powerful. Highly recommended!
