Comments: Welshman Gareth Jones goes to the Soviet Union to interview Stalin. He had interviewed Hitler. But when his colleague and friend is killed outside a hotel in Moscow after mentioning something "big happening" over the telephone, Gareth becomes concerned.

His arrival in Moscow confirms his fears so he leaves for the Ukraine, to visit his mother's birthplace, and with the hope of uncovering the truth. Fortunately, he attracts the attention of one Eric Blair (AKA George Orwell) who writes Animal Farm.

The allusions to Animal Farm and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland are subtle, but important. The film shows the corruption--like bribes--and restriction of movement--journalists barred from leaving Moscow. It goes on to show neighbors spying on neighbors, with the hope that reporting another individual will land them in good standing with The Party!

Let's not forget the starvation of the masses. Bodies in the roads. Dead mothers put on carts with other starved individuals. Their babies heaped on top. The wild parties of excess in Moscow. Cannibalism. The bread lines and the resultant violence. The death of millions due to the famine. That was the Holodomor.

My only complaint is that this film doesn't explain Mr Jones' death in Mongolia at the hands of the Soviet secret police. Still, I recommend this important film.
