Comments: The film begins with an English nobleman writing his memoirs on the eve of his death by hanging. He's raised by his mother to be a duke, who has married "beneath her". She married an opera performer. The family allows women--his mother--to carry on the name to a son. When his mother dies, he's determined to fulfill her dream: him as Duke of D'Ascoyne.
I liked the quaint opening titles. The tone of this film is darkly humorous. Alec Guinness plays eight parts in this film, including a woman. It's based on a novel.
