Comments: Harry, a false preacher, is convicted of car theft and sentenced to prison. Another man, Ben, robs a bank "to stop seeing all the starving kids". When Ben dies unexpectedly in prison, Harry, once again, poses as a preacher and marries Ben's widow to console her, or so it seems.

This film has some dark and creepy scenes. The subject probably made many question religious leaders, which made the movie so powerful upon release. However, the decency of the majority in the '50s evens out the tone, bestowing a message. This film is based on a novel.
