Comments: This film enters Vincent van Gogh's life when he's rejected by the leaders of seminary. He travels to a mining region in an attempt to prove his devotion to the ministry. Instead, he discovers his strong compassion for the miners and other laborers. From there, his drawing and painting career take shape.

Having read a bit about Mr. van Gogh and visited Arles, I am very familiar with the events leading up to his famous act of self-mutilation. I enjoyed how this film doesn't focus on the mistake, instead tries to understand why he took the action. Also, I enjoyed how the film maintains the important, strong tie between the artist and his brother Theo.
