Comments: A man, Renfield, is traveling to Castle Dracula. The weather is difficult, so the coach stops in the town below the castle. The man manages to find his way to his personal carriage and continues on to the castle. What he finds isn't much to his liking. Neither is the Count's plan for him, and they start a journey to England. Can Dracula be stopped?

This pre-Code film is derived from the 1924 adaptation for the stage, and has been preserved by the Library of Congress. The DVD transfer looks good today, despite the film being an early "talkie".

I found it funny that armadillos existed in eastern Europe. Perhaps they were placed because they are unusual? Another oddity for modern folks who know geography is the peasants praying in Hungarian. Transylvania wasn't always part of Romania. In 1931, Transylvania was part of the Kingdom of Hungaria.

Bela Lugosi defines Dracula: shadowy, sinister, and seductive. His performance is outstanding. This film is classic horror without the gore.
