Comments: A modest and clever district attorney (DA) has a record for convicting sentences. He's doing well, punishing crime, until he causes a man to be put to death. It's found that the man is not guilty, but it's too late to save his life. The DA resigns his position and, after a lengthy bender, enters private civil law. He finds himself at odds with a kingpin who owns almost everything and everybody. Will the ashamed former-DA be able to maintain his convictions?

This trial film, with a sprinkling of gangsters, is excellent. The story moves along steadily, and the acting is perfect. There's even a car chase of sorts!

During the filming, Mr. Robinson was under investigation by the House Un-American Activities Committee. However, one wouldn't know it from his superb performance. It also presents an early appearance of sex symbol Jayne Mansfield. Nina Foch is the female lead presenting an intelligent balance. Recommended.
