Comments: A professor accepts a job with the Oxford University Press to produce a compilation of all the English words. Meanwhile, a surgeon, late of the United States Army, kills an innocent. He pleads that the he recognized the man as a vindicative former patient during the War Between the States. He is sentenced to Broadmoor Prison as criminally insane. When the Madman reads the Professor's request for help, he promptly sends a number of words and their literary references. But will this task ward off his demons?

This spectacular film is based on a novel, which is based on the effort of Dr. Murray and Dr. Minor. It moves along well developing the characters. The acting is excellent across the board, helping the film seem realistic. Also, it shows a snippet of then-contemporary therapy for the mentally injured. The story was changed to make a well-rounded film. (The widow probably never interacted with the madman.) Filmed in Ireland. Highly recommended, but be aware of a couple of difficult scenes.
