Comments: This animated film follows two characters in a motorcycle gang in post-apocalyptic (Neo-)Tokyo. One is hurt while fighting with another gang. He's taken by the government, and is the subject of their experiments. He develops special abilities. Meanwhile prematurely-aged children (with ESP) are trying to curtail his powers. But he's attracted to the power of Akira.

This film popularized animé in the West. That's not surprising because it reminds me the Transformers TV show (and the movie), which I grew up watching. This film is based on manga (a graphic novel).
