Comments: Judge Roy Bean, the law west of the Pecos [River], is also known as the hanging judge. He supports the cattlemen and scorns the homesteading families. That all changes when a wanderer arrives in town, accused of horse theft. That's a crime that is punishable by--you guessed it--hanging. The would-be thief spins a yarn about knowing Lillie Langtry, Bean's infatuation; thus saving his skin. The trouble is that, now, he has to prove what he said.

This film is based on a story, which is founded in legend surrounding Judge Roy Bean and Lillie Langtry. I've visited Langtry, Texas. It's just west of the Pecos River and just north of the Rio Grande. The Judge's bar--err, courthouse--still stands. While this film follows a fictious story, it seems to keep the legend alive. Recommended!
