Comments: The film begins immediately before the invasion of Poland by the Nazi army. Antonina Żabińska and Jan Żabiński--a married couple following the Slavic naming convention--run the Warsaw city zoo. After the invasion, many of their animals are killed or confiscated. To avoid liquidation of the center, they ask a sympathetic zookeeper from Berlin if they can raise pigs. The fodder will be waste food from the recently-established Warsaw ghetto. But, they'll be removing more than food for the pigs. The story continues through the defeat of the Nazis.
This film is based on a novel and a true story. It's a sympathetic story of a Polish family putting everything on the line to save an oppressed people. Recommended.
