Title (Year): The Lodger (1944)
GRS Rating: 5 of 5
Notable Cast: Laird Cregar, George Sanders
Duration: 1 hr, 24 min
Comments: Jack the Ripper has started murdering prostitutes in Whitechapel. After the first few murders, a mysterious, tall stranger answers an advertisment for an apartment in a nearby East End district. He takes the room and, also, attic space without hesitation. The landlady is desperate for cash and doesn't ask for references. Time progresses and the occupants of the house begin to wonder if there's a link between their lodger and "the Ripper".
This classic film is enjoyable because it shows how the Victorian East End was visualized by a 1940s film maker. The acting is impressive and the plot moves along smoothly. The film is based on a novel and may have inspired From Hell.
