Comments: The film opens with a company of Nazi storm troopers resting in Italy after a successful campaign in north Africa. Their lieutenant has been badly wounded and has been replaced. The replacement proves himself when he leads his men in combat on the Eastern Front, specifically the Battle of Stalingrad.

This brutal, long battle is brought to life in this German movie. The production is very impressive and must have been very expensive. The acting and plot are very good. There's a powerful message about war, too. It's refreshing to see Nazi soldiers who are disillusioned with the cause.
