Comments: A young girl and her brother are put up for adoption by their destitute mother. The boy dies en route. The girl is understandably traumatized, and she doesn't open up until her kind foster father teaches her to read. She then becomes obsessed with books, even to the point of taking one from a smoldering Nazi burn pile! Her formative years in World-War-II Germany are described in this film.

What a beautiful filmed, sensitively acted, and well put together movie! Based on an Australian novel. Highly recommended.
