Comments: A London girl is suddenly orphaned; however, instead of grieving, she looks around for another place to live. She finds a letter from a relative in the countryside who sounds "interesting, and appalling". Aspiring to be a novelist, she takes the long--tongue-in-cheek--train ride to Sussex with the intention to live with them, and hoping to acquire some material for her book along the way. At the farm she find a mayhem of conflicting oddballs and proceeds to sort it all out.

This is a hilarious film. It's clever and witty. The characters are very memorable, like the preacher who's catch phrase is "you'll all burn!" or the matriarch: "do you know what I saw in the wood shed?". I read that Kate Beckinsale auditioned for this main role, was denied, and then proceeded to badger the director. She wrote a letter citing examples from the book that supported her as the choice lead. Needless to say once she got the role, she really shines in it. Highly recommended for all. Just be ready for tough English accents.
